Faith Without Works is Dead
“Faith without works is dead” used to confuse me. I thought it meant faith had to prove itself, that belief was not enough, and that I was being measured. In recovery, I have come to learn that faith is not judged by action – instead it is revealed through it.
In 12 Step recovery, belief is not the destination. It is the beginning. I can believe I am powerless, but until I stop trying to control everything, that belief has no life. I can believe a Higher Power can restore me, but until I turn something over- my fear, my resentment, my will – restoration remains an idea instead of an experience.
Admitting powerlessness, taking inventory, making amends- these are not moral achievements. They are acts of trust. Each one says, ‘I believe something good can happen if I do this, even if I feel uncomfortable doing it.”
This is where faith gets a foothold and anchor point to launch.
Faith is active.
Faith is participation.
Faith is willingness that presents itself through my behavior.
Faith acts before certainty arrives.
Faith is breath. I can keep breathing in, but if I don’t exhale, I can’t breathe. Faith that stays inward and not acted upon never learns to breathe.
And so I pick up the phone instead of isolating.
I make amends instead of defending.
I show up instead of hiding.
Not perfectly. Not consistently. But honestly, with faith, fellowship, and abstinence as my guides.
